established in 1989 from the pleural effusion of a 15-year-old boy with Ki-1 positive lymphoma (anaplastic large cell lymphoma; ALCL); carries the translocation t(2;5) leading to NPM1-ALK fusion gene; cells were originally described in the literature to be EBV positive; however, viral analyses (PCR and western blot) at the DSMZ established that the cells do not harbor EBV

Subculture:
cells are difficult to culture; seed out at ca. 0.2-0.4 x 106 cells/ml (we recommend 12- or 24-well plates); cells grow slowly at first; viability may be low (60-70%) after thawing; later split culture 1:3 every 3-4 days and maintain at 0.1-0.8 x 106 cells/ml

at 37 °C with 5% CO2

ca. 50-70 hours

maximum density at ca. 1.0 x 106 cells/ml
