As described in literature, the GH cells produce human teratocarcinoma derived viruses (HDTV) which are identical to human endogenous retrovirus K (HERV-K). HERV-K is assigned to biosafety level 2 in Germany. The cell culture supernatant shows a marginal reverse transcriptase activity in the cell culture supernatant which can slightly be stimulated by 5-azacytidine and strongly applying 5-iodo-2-deoxyuridine. The activity was determined employing the product enhanced reverse transcriptase assay (PERT)
