I’m not sure about the purity of my strain, can you check it?
We can plate your strain and check for colony variants. Please contact us before sending the material (MicrobialServices(at)dsmz.de).
-
Which analyses do I need for the description of my new isolated strain?
Please refer to the literature and data available for the strains you want to compare to your isolate. We are neither editors nor reviewers of your publication and cannot anticipate what a potential reviewer would request. Please contact us if you want to discuss the suitability of certain methods for your scientific question or strain.
-
Someone else had to sign the order form but I want to receive the data. Is that possible?
Please note that according to our terms and conditions, information and results can be submitted only to the signing customer.
-
Are my samples and data treated confidentially?
Service provision is strictly confidential. After the completion of the work, the supplied biological materials and resulting cultures are destroyed.
-
Can I buy a mixture of different bacteria and can this be quantified?
Yes, this is possible, details can be found here.
-
What is the turnaround time? Is it possible to prioritize my samples?
Most of analyses are complex and require several steps. Additionally, we might have to repeat analyses or perform additional steps to provide the results. Thus, we cannot predict turnaround times. We process samples as they arrive and according to our experimental procedures and do not prioritize samples.
-
I want to deposit a strain in the culture collection and order services for this strain at the same time. How do I proceed?
Start the deposition process (for more information click here). As soon as the curator responsible accepts your strain you can start the order process for our services. Please inform both: the curator responsible and our service team (MicrobialServices(at)dsmz.de) to ensure a smooth process.
The culture send for deposition will find its way to us internally, however, we cannot guarantee to maintain the strain viable for a longer period. -
How much biomass is needed for each method and in what form?
Cells for biomass production should be harvested during active growth and before sporulation/lysis begins. Cultivation to produce biomass for the different techniques will be charged separately based on the required effort. Please contact us if there are any doubts about the biomass production or shipment.
Method Active culture CDW [mg], freeze dried Wet biomass [mg]* Cellular fatty acids ✔️ 30 200-300 Dpm/OH-Dpm ✔️ (5)** 50 MALDI-TOF ✔️ - - Mycolic acids ✔️ (60)** 600 Peptidoglycan structure ✔️ (1000)** 4000 Polar lipids ✔️ 200 2000 Polyamine pattern ✔️ - 50-100 Respiratory quinones ✔️ 50 500 Whole-cell sugars ✔️ 15 150 *shipped on dry ice or suspended in isopropanol at ambient temperature
**suboptimal, we cannot guarantee a successful preparation of peptidoglycan/extracts -
I have ordered different analyses. Do I have to provide the biomass separately for each analysis?
No. You can provide a sufficient amount of biomass for all analyses in one tube.
-
I’m looking for biochemical data for a DSM strain. Do you have this data available?
We do not have all relevant biochemical data for all DSM strains available, but a substantial amount of data for individual strains can be found in BacDive.
-
I want to order services for a DSM strain. Do I have to order it first and send you the required biomass?
No. For strains of our open collection services and biomass production can be ordered directly. Please note that the biomass production will be charged separately depending on the effort.
-
I cannot/do not want to produce the biomass myself. Do you offer biomass production service?
Yes. You only have to provide the organism in a way that we can re-activate/re-inoculate it. Please note that the biomass production will be charged depending on the effort.
-
Why do I have to send the order form prior to shipment per email? Why do you need information on the isolation source and the next related strains?
We need some information before receiving samples to make sure that we can accept the material and provide you the data. Especially with novel isolates but also with numerous pathogens, we have to check the legal requirements of Germany, e.g. if we need an import permit by local authorities to ensure a smooth processing during the import. Here several aspects have to be considered based on isolation source and the next related strains.
-
What do I have to consider for a safe transport of microorganisms?
Please note: In each case of dispatch of biological material, the shipper is responsible for correct packaging and shipping. For support see our tutorial.
-
What must my package contain?
Beside your samples, please include a printed copy of the order form and documents required for the shipment process. You may also send the strain for deposition in the same parcel and additionally add a printed copy of the accession form. Please make sure that you followed the instructions for the deposition process before sending the strain (for more information click here).
-
Where do I send my package? I need a specific contact person, whom should it be addressed to?
Please ship your package to:

Leibniz-Institut DSMZ-Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH
Inhoffenstr. 7B
D-38124 Braunschweig
GERMANYContact person: Please send an email to MicrobialServices(at)dsmz.de and wait for our reply.

I want to send a genetically modified organism. What do I have to consider?
We accept GMOs up to risk group 2. Please note that we require detailed information on the genetic modifications beforehand per email to follow the legal obligations. Please contact our service team (MicrobialServices(at)dsmz.de).
-
I want to send an organism which is assigned to risk group 2. What do I have to consider?
Please provide all details before starting the shipment per email (MicrobialServices(at)dsmz.de) and wait for our reply. Material allocated to Risk Group 2 falls under the "UN Model Regulations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods" affecting all modes of transport (road, air, rail, waterways). Such material has to be transported in UN certified packaging by a recognized courier. In some cases, we need an import permit and have to contact local authorities prior to shipment.
-
I want to send a plant pathological organism. What do I have to consider?
Please provide all details before starting the shipment per email (MicrobialServices(at)dsmz.de) and wait for our reply. In some cases, we need an import permit and have to contact local authorities prior to shipment.
